For a lot of people, wanting to get a little color when the sun comes out is normal. But that certainly does not make it smart. It is well-established that being outside in the sun without any kind of protection allows harmful UV rays to penetrate and burn our skin.
Whether you get tanned outside or in a tanning salon, by accident or intentionally, the damage caused by UV radiation can cause your skin to age prematurely and put you at an increased risk of skin cancer. The Danish Cancer Society reports that use of sunbeds is carcinogenic and people who use sunbeds increase their risk of getting melanoma by 20%. Tanning before the age of 35, increases the risk by 60% and potentially even further depending on the frequency of sunbed use.
According to the Danish Cancer Society, the “proportion of sunbed users aged 15-64 has fallen from 26% in 2007 to 9% in 2015.” This is a dramatic fall, but 1 out of 11 Danes still use sunbeds.
Tanning isn’t cool. Forget what you think is fashionable, and take care of the only body you have.
